Books

Having a good book in your campervan is always a useful way to unwind. There’s nothing better than a good book for those rainy afternoons spent inside your vehicle.

Tools

It’s a very good idea to carry a set of tools in your T3. After all, they’re vehicles that have been around for years, and sooner or later you’ll have to have a go at fixing them yourself. That, or call a breakdown service – it’s up to you 😀

Wheel removal spanner

One basic skill is being able to change a tyre, whether it’s a puncture or something else. To do this, one tool you’ll definitely need is this wheel wrench with an extendable handle, which lets you apply more force with less effort.

It comes with a socket where one side is 17mm and the other 19mm. The wheel nuts on our vans are 19mm.

That said, I’ve also bought a 21mm socket, as that’s the size of the nuts on my wheel rack.

Bottle jack

There’s no point in being able to remove a wheel if you haven’t lifted the van first. There are several options here: a bottle jack, the van’s original jack or a Hi-Lift. I’ve opted for a bottle jack and will carry a block or some sort of surface to provide extra support and gain height (as our vans are quite high off the ground).

Tyre pressures, inflating and deflating

As this is a 4×4 vehicle, you need to monitor tyre pressures and know when to deflate the tyres for off-road driving and when to inflate them again when returning to the road.

Removing CV joints

If you break a constant-velocity joint, have a spare and are up for the challenge, you’ll need this set of special sockets to loosen the numerous bolts you’ll encounter when you start this job.

Most of the following spare parts are suitable and have been tested for the 1988 Volkswagen T3 Syncro 2.1 DJ 112 cv. There are others that are suitable for all engine variants.

Gearbox oil

Our gearboxes have a capacity of 1.5 litres of gearbox oil. One of the best you can use is Motul, specifically this one.

Fuel filter

I recommend replacing the fuel filter with one from Mann Filter. It’s also a good idea to take this opportunity to replace the fuel lines to avoid any nasty surprises.

Air filter

A very good filter for the 2.1 DJ. From Mann-Filter.

Oil filter

This one is specifically designed for the 2.1 DJ engines. It’s the Mann-Filter oil filter.

Engine oil

And once you’ve fitted the new oil filter, it’s time to top up with some good-quality 15W40 oil from Castrol. The approximate amount to add is 4.5 litres.
