Syncro – petrol or diesel?

This first one isn’t really a question with a clear-cut answer. Anyone with a petrol car will most likely say ‘petrol’, whilst anyone with a TDI will say ‘diesel – the better, the better’. What is certainly true, however, is that the purest option for these vehicles is a Waterboxer engine, as this option is no longer available in later generations. Can you tell that my Syncro is fitted with a 2.1 DJ? Well, there you go…

How’s the cardan shaft holding up?

Well, this ties in with the previous question, as it depends on whether it’s a petrol or diesel engine – the procedure is different for each. On petrol engines, the deflector goes at the back, whilst on diesel engines it has to be at the front.

Which screws should I use for the cardan shaft?

It is very important here not to make the mistake of using standard bolts. The entire torque from the gearbox is transmitted via the cardan shaft, and therefore high-strength bolts with a strength class of 12.9 are required

Which constant-velocity joints should I fit?

The Syncro models have six identical constant-velocity joints (the four at the rear and, at the front, those on the differential side). The recommended ones are the Lobro 332255 or GKN 22407. Those from the Porsche 944 can also be fitted.

Finally, make sure the bolts are fitted with their serrated washers.

Which radiator should I fit?

A good option is to fit a slightly thicker aluminium heat sink (42 mm), such as the NRF 53944.

What should I use to insulate the van?

To insulate the van against the cold and heat, there’s nothing better than Kaiflex. I’ve also used soundproofing for the van in the front floor area and the engine compartment.

Which silent blocks are worth replacing?

It is recommended that you replace them with Powerflex ones. They are more expensive but come with a lifetime guarantee; they are made of polyurethane rather than rubber and work very well. That said, there are some that are more highly recommended for replacement, such as those on the anti-roll bar or the steering, and others that are less so, such as the engine mounts and front differential. Which gearbox oil should I use?

For the gearbox, we recommend, for example, the lubricating oil Eni Rotra HY 80w90
