History of the VW T4 California Exclusive

The Volkswagen T4, also known as the Transporter T4 or Eurovan in some markets, marked an era in the history of camper vans and commercial vehicles. Introduced in 1990, the T4 was the first generation of the Transporter series to feature a front-mounted engine and front-wheel drive, representing a revolutionary change in the design and functionality of Volkswagen vans. This change allowed for better use of interior space, as well as a more stable and efficient drive. During its production run, which lasted until [year], a total of 1,913,053 Volkswagen T4 units were manufactured, cementing its popularity both in the commercial sector and amongst campervan enthusiasts.

Among the various versions of the Volkswagen T4 California produced were options to suit different travellers’ needs, with a choice of short or long wheelbase and the option of a pop-up roof or high roof. This flexibility made the California an ideal choice for those seeking a bespoke campervan for their adventures.

Among the most notable of these versions is the Volkswagen T4 California Exclusive, launched in 1994 and produced until 2003. Unlike other California variants, such as the standard California, which offered the choice of a pop-up roof or a high roof, the California Exclusive was available only with a long chassis and a fixed high roof. This design provided greater interior headroom, allowing occupants to stand comfortably inside, which significantly improved the experience of living in the van during long journeys or extended stays.

The interior of the California Exclusive was optimised to provide everything needed for life on the road. Fitted with a full kitchen at the rear, a sink, a fridge and multiple storage compartments, this version was designed to be a true home on wheels. The rear seats converted into a double bed, whilst the high roof housed an additional bed, allowing four people to sleep comfortably in the van. This layout, combined with the enclosed spaces and available heating systems, made it a very popular choice for travellers seeking comfort in all seasons.

The 1996 facelift was a key moment for the Volkswagen T4. This change was made exclusively to accommodate the VR6 petrol engine, a larger and more powerful engine that required more space in the front compartment.

To achieve this, Volkswagen lengthened the van’s front end, leading to the distinction between the ‘short-nose’ (1994–1996) and ‘long-nose’ (1996–2003) models. But this was not the only change: the front doors, front wings, bonnet, front grilles and headlights were also modified. These aesthetic and structural changes not only enabled the use of the VR6 engine, but also improved the vehicle’s appearance and aerodynamic performance.

In addition to these design changes, the facelift also brought improvements in terms of safety and comfort, such as the inclusion of front airbagsABS and rear disc brakes, which were previously optional but became standard on models produced after 1996.

As well as the California Exclusive, other notable models within the T4 California range include the California Club, which featured a rear kitchen layout and a long chassis with a high roof, and the California Coach, a more compact option with a short chassis and a choice between a pop-up roof or a high roof. There are also versions such as the California Highway, which celebrated Westfalia’s 150th anniversary, and the California Beach, aimed at a younger, more adventurous audience – such as surfers and cyclists – with a lighter, more minimalist design.

In short, the Volkswagen T4 California Exclusive represents an evolution within Volkswagen’s camper van range, designed to offer comfort and functionality on long journeys. Today, it remains a highly prized model amongst campervan enthusiasts and is regarded as a key part of the history of adventure vehicles. With its high roof and distinctive features, the California Exclusive continues to inspire generations of adventurers seeking the perfect combination of freedom and comfort on the road.
