Even though I haven’t finished fitting out the van yet, if I see an item or product that’ll be useful to me and is good value, I’ll buy it. That’s what happened when I came across some 4×4 recovery plates on Amazon at a great price and with very favourable reviews.
Our 4×4 vans have incredible off-road capabilities, but that doesn’t mean you won’t one day need to use tools to get you out of a tight spot. These situations usually take the form of sand, mud or snow, where there’s a high chance of your wheels getting stuck. In that case, you’ll want to reach for a pair of 4×4 recovery plates.
What are rescue plates?
Rescue plates are wide wedges, usually made from polypropylene – a material that’s both very strong and flexible – or from aluminium. These rescue plates are designed so that, once you’re stuck in sand, snow or mud, you can place them in front of the wheels to gain traction and get out of the obstacle. They’re lightweight for easy handling and usually have a shovel-like shape at the ends to clear away material and allow them to be positioned as close as possible to the tyre.
The plates usually have holes that serve as mounting points for securing them to the vehicle. They can also be used to link them together to form a track of plates.

They’re also available in black, orange or red. They’re made from polypropylene, which makes them highly durable.
Reviews of the boards
My opinion, having received them, is that they’re very good – excellent value for money. They don’t feel like cheap Chinese imports at all, and their price is a far cry from other brands. They’re more than adequate for the use I’ll be putting them to.
If we look on Amazon, we can see that they have good reviews and that quite a few people mention the quality of these rescue mats. People also mention that they don’t have a plastic smell, so they can be stored inside the vehicle, and that they look sturdy and well-finished. The main criticism is that, although the packaging promises six traction mats, they’re actually not included.
