Campervan – my new project

They say we all need goals and projects in life. For many years now, most of mine have been linked to the world of motoring.

Today (28/09/2016) I’m launching a new project into which I’m going to pour all my enthusiasm and passion.

Campervan Project

The aim of this project is to get a campervan so we can try out travelling this way without having to rely on hotels for accommodation. Will it be comfortable travelling like this? Will it suit my personality? And my partner’s?

What’s clear is that it’s different from the way we’ve travelled up to now, and we have no experience of this way of travelling, but after discussing it we’ve decided to go ahead – and, well, if it doesn’t work out, we’ll sell the van and move on to something else. Although my gut feeling tells me it’s going to be a success.

On the other hand, another reason for getting involved in this project is that I’ve always been fascinated by the whole restoration process; I’m the sort of person who likes to leave things in perfect condition, and I enjoy researching and thinking about how I can improve things. So the project really motivates me, as a campervan offers a thousand and one possibilities.

Right, let’s get down to business – what sort of van am I looking for?

First and foremost, and what really catches my eye, is that it seems to be a trend – in other words, there are loads of people who love this way of travelling and this lifestyle. This means that most campervans (and certain makes) command high prices on the second-hand market.

On the other hand, I consider myself a design enthusiast. If you think of a campervan – an iconic model – which one would you say? That’s right, the Volkswagens. It’s clear that for many people, the Volkswagen T1 or T2 springs to mind. But my choice is the Volkswagen T3. However, there’s one very important caveat: the one I really like for its looks and capabilities is the Volkswagen T3 Syncro.

Fun fact: this project began, unbeknownst to me, back in 2011 when, whilst in Calpe (Alicante), my attention was instantly drawn to a van parked next to the building I was in.

In fact, I took a photo of it from the balcony because I was so fascinated by it.

It’s curious that, five years after taking that snapshot, I’ve now embarked on this new project.
