The Zapp family: make your dreams come true

Learning about the history of the Zapp family is a source of wonder and surprise. Let me explain why.

Before deciding to buy my T3 Syncro , I took some time to reflect and seek advice. You wonder whether it’ll be a good vehicle, whether we’ll actually use it, whether it’ll be too old for travelling, whether our daughter will be comfortable, and whether we’ll adapt to this new way of travelling.
Then, you learn about the Zapps’ story and your preconceptions are completely turned on their head.

The story of the Zapp family

It all began on 25 January 2000, when Cande and Herman, an Argentine couple, set out to fulfil their dream of travelling. Setting off from Buenos Aires in a 1928 Graham Paige, just the two of them. Their aim was to reach Alaska, but they haven’t stopped travelling since 2000. So, I imagine all sorts of things must have happened to them over the years. They say that six months into their journey, they ran out of money in Ecuador. They had to make handicrafts and paint pictures to sell to cover their expenses. In fact, they have no sponsors; the only support they receive is from people who make donations.

So far, so normal – sure, they’re driving a 1928 car, which adds a touch of daring to their adventure. But their greatest feat is that over the years they’ve had four children. In my opinion, that’s truly impressive. They’ve raised four children, all born in different parts of the world:

• Pampa: born in Greensboro, North Carolina, in June 2002.
• Tehue: born in Buenos Aires in March 2005.
• Paloma: born in Vancouver in November 2007.
• Wallaby: born in Australia in March 2009.
